Travel Support
For undergraduates:
- Undergraduate Diversity at Evolution 2012 travel award. This award brings talented and diverse undergraduates from throughout the US and Puerto Rico to the congress to present a poster, receive mentoring and participate in a career-oriented 'Undergraduate Futures in Evolutionary Biology' panel and discussion. The program covers travel, registration, room and board. Applications consist of a short statement of interest, a letter of recommendation, and the title and abstract of the poster to be presented. For graduate students:
- CSEE graduate student members who are traveling more than 500 km to the meeting can request to be considered for a $500 CDN travel grant. Applications are made when registering for the meeting and will be accepted until Apr. 30 (i.e. during the early registration period only). Recipients will be randomly selected from among the list of applicants and will be informed by May 15th at the latest.
- ASN graduate students can request to be considered for a $500 US travel award. Applications are made when registering for the meeting and will be accepted until Apr. 30 (i.e. during the early registration period only). To be eligible, the student must be presenting a talk or poster at the meeting and must not have received the travel award in the previous year. Recipients will be randomly selected from among the list of applicants and will be informed by May 15th at the latest.
- All ESEB graduate student members who reside outside Canada or the USA will have their registration fees reduced to $100 CDN (until Apr. 30, i.e. during early registration only). The option of this reduced fee will be available during registration for the meeting.
- Graduate students of any society can volunteer to help during the congress. In return for volunteering approximately a half-day of their time, students will receive a rebate equal to 50% of the regular student early registration fee (i.e. 50% of $275 = $137.50). Applications are made when registering for the meeting and will be accepted until Apr. 30 (i.e. during the early registration period only). Recipients will be randomly selected from among the list of applicants and will be informed by May 15th at the latest. Registration fees must be paid in advance and the rebate is processed after the meeting, subject to completion of assigned volunteer duties.
- Student Travel Supplements of $500 US will be randomly selected from among the list of SSE graduate students who volunteer to help during the congress, as described in #4 above. Applications are made when registering for the meeting and will be accepted until Apr. 30 (i.e. during the early registration period only). Recipients will be randomly selected from among the list of SSE volunteers and will be informed by May 15th at the latest.
For early career scientists:
- SSE Travel Stipends. These stipends are for students and young scientists to attend the Congress. The award can be used toward travel and living expenses, as well as registration fees. Applications can be submitted by scientists at various stages of their professional career (e.g., Masters and PhD students, postdocs, and lecturers). Scientists working in a country with high GDP are not eligible. For additional details and the application procedure consult the SSE website. The deadline for application is Feb. 19, 2012.
- ESEB Travel Stipends. These stipends are analogous to those offered by the SSE, so there is no need to apply for both. Additional details can be found by following the ‘Travel Award’ link on ESEB’s website. The deadline for applications is Feb. 19, 2012.
For faculty:
- NESCent Travel Award for MSI Faculty. The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent), with support from the Society for the Study of Evolution, offers travel awards for faculty members from MSIs (‘minority serving institutions’), HBCUs (‘historically black colleges or universities’) or other institutions with significant enrollment of under-represented minority students to attend the congress. Awards cover conference registration, travel, food and lodging. This award is intended to provide MSI faculty with an opportunity to present original research in disciplines typically represented at the meetings. As such, applications must include a talk/poster title and abstract, as well as a brief (1 page) statement describing how this award will contribute to your professional/scientific development, and benefit your students and institution.
